Joseph Griffen is a director, DOP and photographer living and working in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand. He obtained his Master’s Degree (MFA) from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 2011. Joseph is co-founder of renowned artist-run spaces FERARI (2012-2014), and ROCKIES (2014-2016) and has also exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery of New Zealand, Plaza and Fuzzy Vibes.
An interest in the subtle phenomena found in each environment sees Griffen capture ephemeral details with a textural luminosity – mist, fog, light, reflection; the trace left by a body. Surface studies play with delicate painterly scratches, layers, crops and erasures; words etched into dry paint echoing the hand that left it. Layers of flaking paint reveal the ghost of words once tagged underneath. Even his most controlled work remains alive to the surprising interruptions that emerge in discovered sites and chance encounters.
